These are counts in one KanjiVG snapshot. A count is not a rule of stroke order. The page makes no claim about meaning.
Cinnabar is the first group in data-stroke-highlight, indigo the next, ochre the third. A plate without that attribute is not recolored. Click a plate to replay. With reduced motion the finished character stays still, and the colors stay. The draw timings are unchanged. The plate stays cream in either theme.

How an expression is read
- Operator
- An Ideographic Description Character. The operator of a group is the row whose position multiset equals the kvg:position values on that group’s slots. A slot is one slot from slots_of. A run of paths is one slot. Sibling groups that share kvg:element and kvg:number and carry kvg:part are one slot.
- Argument
- The arguments are those slots, in the spatial order of the row. The number of arguments is the valence. It is not a stroke count.
- Spatial order
- Left before right. Top before bottom. Top, then middle, then bottom. The outer part before the inner part. The walk is depth-first in that order. The order is the map row. It is the positions, not the order of the children in the file.
- Hit
- Every composition in the tree has a row in the map, and the spatial walk emits stroke 1, then 2, and on to N.
- Inside first
- A mapped enclosure, ⿴ or ⿵ or ⿸ or ⿺, whose two arguments are each one block, and the inner block ends before the outer block starts. A character in this class is counted here only.
- Frame last
- A kamae, tare, or ⿵A slot is not one block, and some other stroke of the same parent lies strictly inside its span. A character already counted as inside-first stays there.
- Part split
- A kvg:part slot is not one block, and the character is not inside-first and not frame-last.
- Unmapped
- Some composition has no row in the map, and none of the three classes above applies. The group is counted. No order is assigned to it.
- Document order
- In this snapshot every path element appears in the file as stroke 1, then 2, and on to N. A walk that follows the file is true of every character. That walk is not the test.
