Node
A component group. The character group, the one whose id is kvg: and five hex digits, is the node at depth 1. Each group slot under a node is one further node. A run of paths is a slot, not a node.
Slot
An immediate argument of a node, joined as on the valence atlas. A run of paths is one slot. An immediate group is one slot. Sibling groups that carry kvg:part and share kvg:element and kvg:number (empty when the attribute is absent) are one slot. A part nested inside a different sibling stays inside that sibling.
Arity
How many immediate slots the node takes. Valence is that number: the arity of the composition, whose arguments are the slots. It is not the stroke count, and it is not how many groups the file had before a part-split was joined.
Depth
The character group is depth 1. A group slot under it is one deeper, and so on. A stroke-run slot adds no depth. The depth of a character is its deepest node. That number is the nesting depth the valence atlas records, and the two agree for every jōyō character in this snapshot.
Where a stroke is realized
A stroke is counted at the depth of the node whose stroke-run slot contains it. A stroke that sits inside a deeper group is counted there, and not again under an ancestor. The strokes of one character partition its paths. A part-split node is one node: the children of its groups are lined up in document order and slotted by the same rules, so the paths of 国’s two 囗 groups are one stroke slot at that node’s depth.

棄 · depth 9, one of the two deepest trees. The top still takes two slots.

明, further down, stops at depth 2. 棄 and 御 are the only jōyō characters whose longest chain runs nine groups.

The strokes are drawn in writing order, then each depth that realizes a stroke lights in turn. The color is the depth, not the slot. A depth with no stroke of its own is skipped in the cycle. Click a plate to replay. With reduced motion the finished character stays still, and every depth keeps its color.

Arity at each depth

Each row is one depth. Nodes is how many component groups sit there, after part-splits are joined. The columns 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4+ say how many of those nodes take that many child slots. Depth 1 is one node per jōyō character, and its columns are the valence-atlas counts.

Depth Nodes 0 1 2 3 4+ Strokes

Strokes realized at each depth

The height is how many strokes, across the whole jōyō list, are realized under nodes at that depth. A stroke is counted once. The same numbers are the last column of the table above.

How deep the trees go

The depth of a character is its deepest node. The count is how many of the jōyō characters reach that depth and no further.

Depth Characters

The deepest trees

Every jōyō character whose deepest node is at depth 7 or more is listed. Two reach depth 9. Two reach depth 8. Ten reach depth 7. The chain is one longest path of element names. Where two paths tie, the earlier group in the file is kept. An empty name is a group with no kvg:element.

Character Depth Top arity Strokes Longest chain

The same count, further down

木 realizes all four strokes at depth 1. 明 is depth 2, and both arguments are stroke groups, so the eight strokes all sit at depth 2. 森 is depth 3: the upper 木 at depth 2, the two 木 inside 林 at depth 3. 棄 and 御 are the two trees that reach depth 9.

From one group to four

A part-split is still one node

国 joins the two 囗 groups into one node. Its three paths are one stroke slot, at depth 2, and 玉’s strokes are realized at depth 3. 州 joins the three 川 groups into one node. That node still has a child, 丨, at depth 3.

Arity at the top is not the depth

黄 takes three slots and stops at depth 2. 幾 also takes three slots at the top, and the longest chain runs to depth 5. Depth 3 of 幾 is two groups, 戈 and 人, and neither realizes a stroke of its own: the strokes sit in the groups under them.

Depth 8 and depth 9

滞 reaches depth 8. 御 reaches depth 9, as 棄 does. The top of each is still two slots.
