These are counts in one KanjiVG snapshot. A count is not a rule.

Cinnabar marks the strokes of that one occurrence. Click a plate to replay. With reduced motion the finished character stays still, and the mark stays. The highlight is optional data-stroke-highlight. A plate without it is not recolored. The draw timings are unchanged.

How a component is matched

A component on this page is one occurrence of a kvg:element inside a jōyō character. The helper is instances_of in tools/component_order.py. The character group is find_root in tools/positions.py. The grades are the adjusted grades behind the grades page.

Occurrence
A group with kvg:element and no kvg:part is one occurrence. Groups that carry kvg:part and share kvg:element and kvg:number are joined: nested copies of one part number are one part, and a new occurrence starts when the part number stops increasing in stroke order. The character’s own outer group is not an occurrence. A plain group whose strokes are exactly the strokes of two or more descendant groups of the same element is a container, not another occurrence.
Sequence
The kvg:type of the occurrence’s strokes, in -sN order, with a trailing run of ASCII letters deleted from each slash-separated piece. The slash stays. ㇑ and ㇑a are the same string. ㇔/㇏ is not ㇏. A stroke that sits in a gap between those strokes is not part of the sequence.
Relative order
The -sN numbers of those strokes, each minus the first. (0, 1, 2) is three strokes in a row. (0, 3) is two strokes with two other strokes between them. The comparison uses this list, not the absolute stroke numbers, which change from character to character.
Same
The sequence and the relative order both match the reference.
Spacing
The sequence matches and the relative order does not. The stroke types are the same, in the same order, and other strokes sit between them in a different pattern.
Different
The sequence does not match the reference. A different stroke type, a different length, or a different order of types is this column. Spacing is not this column.
Reference
One occurrence of that element. Its character is in the earliest grade that contains the element. The secondary group is later than grades 1–6. Inside that grade, the character is the one with the smallest Gallery index. Inside that character, the occurrence with the smallest first stroke number is the reference. The reference itself is not a comparison.
Grade gap
Gap 0 is another occurrence in a character of the reference grade, including a second copy in the reference character. Gap k, for k from 1 to 5, is a character k elementary grades later. A comparison in the secondary group is its own row. It is not gap 7, and it is not the number of grades from the reference to secondary school.
What the neighbouring pages count
The element order consistency page compares each occurrence with the sequence that element uses most often, letters included, for elements in at least twenty characters. It does not use the school grade, and this page does not repeat that table. The grades page counts nesting depth and leave-and-return in each grade. It does not compare a component’s internal order, and this page does not repeat that table. The component consistency page compares an occurrence with the element’s own file, or with the most common sequence when that file is missing. The reference here is the earliest-grade character, not that file.

Counts by grade gap

Same, spacing, and different partition the row. The seven rows add to the comparison total, and the total row says so.

Elements with the most differences

Each row is one element. Same, spacing, and different add to that row. The shown rows and the other row add to the comparison total. The reference occurrence is not in the row.
