These are counts in one KanjiVG snapshot. A count is not a rule, and it makes no claim about meaning.

Cinnabar is the first slot in space, indigo the middle slot, green the last. On a row those are left, middle, and right. On a column they are top, middle, and bottom. The tint is data-valence-slots. A plate without it is not recolored. Click a plate to replay. With reduced motion the finished character stays still, and the colors stay. The draw timings are unchanged. The plate stays cream in either theme.

How three slots are counted

A top-level slot is one immediate piece of the character group. Sibling groups that carry kvg:part, the same kvg:element, and the same kvg:number are one slot, even when another sibling sits between them. The helper is slots_of in tools/positions.py. That join is why 衛 is two slots under slots_of: the two parts of 行 are joined. This page looks for exactly three slots along one axis. When a group sits between the two parts of 行, those two parts stay apart.

A row is exactly one of three patterns. Nest: the top-level slots are one kvg:position left and one kvg:position right, and exactly one of those two groups is itself one left and one right. The three leaves are ordered left, then right. 謝 is 言, then 身, then 寸. 樹 is 木, then 壴, then 寸. Frame: the root has exactly three immediate groups and no bare path. The first is kvg:element 行, kvg:part 1, position kamae. The third is 行, kvg:part 2, on that group, or on its only child when the group itself has no element. That position is kamae, right, or left. The middle group is not a part of 行. The characters are 衛, 街, 衝, 衡, and 術. Position: exactly three immediate groups, with positions left, then a value outside left, right, top, bottom, middle, kamae, tare, nyo, kamaec, tarec, and nyoc, then right. In this snapshot that character is 兆. An enclosure whose positions are kamae, and that is not this 行 frame, is not a row. 国 is not a row.

A column is exactly one of three patterns. Nest: the same test as a row, with top and bottom in place of left and right. The leaves are ordered top, then bottom. Only one side is expanded, and only one level, so the leaves stay three. 量 is 日, then 一, then 里. 賓 is the top group, then 目, then 八. Three: exactly three immediate groups, with positions top, middle, and bottom. 黄 and 霊. Stack: the top-level slots are one top and one bottom, and neither side is itself a top and bottom split, so the nest pattern did not apply. Exactly one side is a single group whose immediate children are exactly two groups, with no bare path and no kvg:position on either child. Those two boxes are stacked by the cut in tools/rule_audit.py: horizontal overlap at least 0.45 of the narrower box, vertical overlap at most 0.30 of the shorter box, and a center-y gap of at least 8. SVG y grows downward, so the smaller center is the upper slot. A side-by-side pair fails the cut. The two 木 under 林 in 森 sit side by side, so 森 is not a column. 意 is 立, then 日, then 心. A character is in one arrangement only.

Spatial order
Each slot is one run. The runs are the first slot, then the middle slot, then the last slot: left, middle, right, or top, middle, bottom. No slot carries kvg:part.
Part mark
At least one slot carries kvg:part. In the priority used here, a slot that occupies two or more runs and also carries kvg:part is counted in this class. Every other part-mark character has one run per slot, in spatial order. The mark is on the slot. It does not open a gap inside the slot.
Return
Some slot occupies two or more runs, and that slot does not carry kvg:part. The pen leaves the slot and comes back to it.
Other slot order
Each slot is one run, and the run order is not first, then middle, then last. This class is tested after a return, so a character with two runs of one slot is not counted here.

The counts

Spatial order, part mark, return, and other slot order partition each arrangement. The four counts add to the total, including a count of zero.
