Order depth vs stroke rank
For each stroke of the 2,136 jōyō characters, the KanjiVG nesting depth beside the rank k/n.
Counts and means only. No conclusions are drawn from small groups. These are counts in one KanjiVG snapshot. A stroke count is not a rule of stroke order, and it does not say what a character means.
The strokes are drawn in writing order, then each depth that realizes a stroke lights in turn. The color is the depth. A depth with no stroke of its own is skipped in the cycle. Click a plate to replay. With reduced motion the finished character stays still, and every depth keeps its color. The mark is optional data-depth-cycle. A plate without it is not recolored. The plate stays cream in either theme. The draw timings are unchanged.

How a stroke is counted
- Depth
- The depth at which the stroke is realized, the same depth as on Valence at every depth. Depth 1 is the character group, the group whose id is kvg: and five hex digits. Each enclosing component group is one deeper. A run of paths adds no depth. A stroke is counted at the node whose stroke-run slot contains it, and not again under an ancestor. This page does not repeat that page’s arity table.
- Rank
- k/n. Stroke k is the path numbered k. n is the number of strokes. Stroke 1 is the first stroke. Stroke n is the last.
- Rank tenth
- The bin b in 0..9 such that k/n lies in (b/10, (b+1)/10]. In integers, b = ⌈10k/n⌉ − 1. The table lists the right edge of that bin. The last stroke is in the last tenth. A first stroke is in the first tenth only when n is at least 10. This is the same cut as on Stroke tempo by rank.
- Early, middle, late
- The early third is k/n in (0, 1/3], the middle third is (1/3, 2/3], and the late third is (2/3, 1]. In integers, early when 3k ≤ n, middle when 3k ≤ 2n, and late otherwise. A one-stroke character has rank 1, so its only stroke is late. These are the same thirds as on Stroke tempo by rank.
- The deepest strokes
- The strokes whose depth equals the greatest depth of any stroke in that character. A node that realizes no stroke does not give a stroke a greater depth.
- The tie rule
- When two or more strokes share that greatest depth, the earliest stroke number is the one classified. The character is early, middle, or late according to the third of that stroke. A character whose deepest strokes fall in more than one third is a split. The earliest stroke still decides its class. Because that stroke is the earliest, a split is never classed late.
- Mean depth
- The mean of the integer depths in a tenth, rounded half up to a thousandth. The total row is the mean of every stroke, not the mean of the ten rows.
- A small group
- Counts and means only. No conclusions are drawn from small groups. A stroke count with fewer than 30 characters is a small group. The table by stroke count lists a row only when the group has at least 30 characters. A smaller group stays in the other counts. Order by component count and Stroke count and order measures leave a small group as a count. A count there is not a rule of stroke order, and it does not say what a character means. The same is true here.
- Other pages
- Valence at every depth counts slot arity down the tree. This page uses that page’s stroke depth and does not repeat the arity table. Stroke tempo by rank bins length by the same tenths and the same thirds. This page does not repeat that table.
Mean depth by rank tenth
The ten stroke counts add to the strokes. The total row’s mean is the mean of every stroke, not the mean of the ten rows. Counts and means only. No conclusions are drawn from small groups.

Where the deepest strokes fall
Each character is in one third, the third of its earliest deepest stroke. Agree and the split column add to the characters. The three character counts add to 2,136. The deepest-stroke column counts every stroke at that greatest depth, in its own third. Those three counts add to the deepest strokes. They are not the character counts. Counts only. No conclusions are drawn from small groups.

By stroke count
A row is listed when the stroke count has at least 30 characters. On each row, early, middle, and late add to the characters. The shown row adds the listed rows. It is not the jōyō total. The characters below 30 stay in the paragraph. Counts only. No conclusions are drawn from small groups.
