Enclosing frames and their closing stroke
For each top-level KanjiVG enclosure, whether the frame’s strokes come before the inside, are split around it, or come after it.
These are counts in one KanjiVG snapshot. A count is not a rule.
Cinnabar strokes are the frame. Indigo strokes are the inside. Click a plate to replay. With reduced motion the finished character stays still, and the colors stay. The tint is optional data-frame. A plate without it is not recolored. The draw timings are unchanged.

How a frame is counted
A frame is a top-level slot of the character group whose kvg:position is kamae, tare, or nyo. A top-level slot is one immediate piece of that group. Sibling groups with kvg:part, the same kvg:element, and the same kvg:number are one slot. The helper is slots_of in tools/positions.py. kamaec, tarec, and nyoc are the complement, and they are not frames. left, right, top, bottom, and any other value are not enclosure positions.
- Frame
- A top-level slot with kvg:position kamae, tare, or nyo. The slot’s strokes are the frame.
- Inside
- Every stroke of the character that is not in that frame. On a character with two frames, each frame is counted against the other strokes, including the other frame.
- Before
- The frame’s strokes are one unbroken run, the run starts at stroke 1, and it does not include stroke N. Every inside stroke comes after the frame.
- Split
- The slot is joined from kvg:part 1 and kvg:part 2. Part 1 is a run that starts at stroke 1. Part 2 is a run that ends on stroke N. Every inside stroke lies strictly between them. The frame opens first, and the closing strokes are last.
- After
- The frame’s strokes are one unbroken run, the run ends on stroke N, and it does not include stroke 1. Every inside stroke comes before the frame.
- What the neighbouring pages count
- The radical-order page asks where the radical marked general falls. It does not list every enclosure element. The leave-and-return page counts every kvg:part split and the strokes written in the gap. It does not partition enclosure elements into before, split, and after. The enclosure-closing page finds closed regions in the finished raster and the stroke that closes each region. It does not read kvg:position. The closure-distance page measures the gap between an opening stroke and a closing stroke. It does not give one row per frame element. The positions page counts seven families. Its enclosure, hanging, and wrap rows are these same slots, timed as first, last, and interrupted. This page keeps only kamae, tare, and nyo, names the element, and states the relation of the frame to the inside.
