Old and new forms
Jōyō characters whose 康熙字典体 is printed in parentheses in the 2010 jōyō list, set beside the 通用字体: stroke counts, and which components keep their place.
- Old form, new form
- The old form is the character in round parentheses in the 2010 list. The new form is the headword, the 通用字体. Square brackets are a permitted form (許容字体) and are not a pair. One headword may print more than one old form. 弁 prints three: 辨, 瓣, 辯.
- Stroke count
- The number of paths in the KanjiVG main file whose id is
kvg:<hex>-sN, numbered from 1 with no gap. The difference in a row is the new count minus the old count. - Component, and its place
- A top-level component is a
kvg:elementgroup directly under the character group. A group with no element is skipped, and its children are read at the same level. Groups that share one element and carrykvg:partare one component. The place is the order the pen enters them: the smallest stroke number first. The second level is the same reading inside each top-level component, then one list in that same stroke order. - First component, last component
- The first component is the top-level element that contains stroke 1. The last component is the top-level element that contains the final stroke. A stroke that sits on the character group, and not inside a top-level component, has no component at that end.
- What happens at one index
- Kept: the same element, and the same stroke count. Fewer: the same element, and fewer strokes in the new file. More: the same element, and more strokes in the new file. Simplified: a different element, and fewer strokes in the new file. Replaced: a different element, and the new component is not shorter. Dropped: the index is only in the old list. Added: the index is only in the new list. These labels describe the two files. They do not say why a form was chosen.
A label names what the two KanjiVG files do at one index. It does not say why the list printed one form or the other.
Each plate draws itself in writing order. The new form is on the left, the old form on the right. Cinnabar marks the shared component named on that plate. Indigo marks the second named component. A plate with no color has no shared top-level element. Click a plate to replay. With reduced motion the finished character stays still, and the color stays.

Every pair
One row is one pair, in the order of the Gallery index. A cell with two names shows the new form, then the old form. An empty end is a stroke that is not inside a top-level component.
